Name: Helena Bertinelli Door: Left Canon: Birds of Prey (DCEU) Canon Point: Post-canon Age: 31 Appearance: Link History: Link Personality: Helena is a person whose goals and personality are hugely affected by her greatest trauma: witnessing her entire family being gunned down in front of her. Her entire life was spent training and honing her skills specifically so that she could seek revenge on the men responsible for her family's massacre. This goal became a violent obsession at a very young age -- even as a child, she would draw pictures of herself killing the men who'd destroyed her family. As a result, she grew up to be a violent but determined, methodical person who was skilled in multiple forms of combat and especially deadly with a crossbow. The result is that she is an expert fighter and incredibly capable, but other areas of her life are left lacking -- she is incredibly bad at managing her emotions, especially her anger(even when over minor slights), and she hasn't had much of a life outside of her goals. Helena has also been sheltered from the world outside of her own narrow mindset, and her entire childhood & adulthood were subsumed by a quest for revenge. It's implied that successfully carrying out her vengeance was a more hollow victory than she had imagined it would be, which is why she immediately began putting her talents into general crime-fighting afterwards. Another area in her life that has been left lacking is her connections with others. While she was raised by a set of father figures who she respects, their relationships revolved around her training to become a killer. As a result, her main connections are to the people she's already lost, the family who was killed and who she was obsessed with avenging. She has very little in the way of friends or a social circle, but at the end of Birds of Prey, this starts to change: she befriends Renee Montoya and Dinah Lance to form a crime-fighting squad. These relationships are new to her, but she enjoys her new companions and is learning to open up. One difficulty in her new, budding social life is that she is very awkward when not pursuing a goal and has difficulty interacting with others casually. She is very invested in how to behave when in combat or facing a foe (to the point of practicing her catchphrases in front of a mirror until she gets them right). However, she never learned how to behave like a regular human being in normal situations, including not understanding social norms (like what a fist bump is) and misreading social cues (such as bursting into loud, inappropriate laughter at the wrong times). Her new role on the Birds of Prey has been a learning opportunity for her to get more experience with friends and socializing, but she's still definitely not fully up to speed yet. In spite of her ruthlessness, Helena still has morals that she keeps to, and is not an evil person. Her violent tendencies are only aimed at those who have hurt her or who are trying to cause harm, and she can be supportive & protective to those in need. She especially has a softness for children, trying to shield them from harm and trauma to prevent the same distress she experienced as a child. Helena has a strong belief in justice, though not through legal means -- she is a pure vigilante, wanting to achieve her goals outside the law to accomplish what's necessary. Powers and Abilities: Helena is a normal, non-superpowered human being and does not have any magical/supernatural abilities that would need to be warped. She is a very skilled assassin and great with combat & marksmanship, but nothing outside the realm of a trained human being.
